How to make an SMS QR code with a pre-written text message

What an SMS QR code does

Scanning an SMS QR code opens the messaging app on the phone with your number in the recipient field and, if you set one, the message already typed. The person only has to press send. It is a simple way to collect opt-ins, vote in a poll, request a callback, book a slot or enter a giveaway without anyone typing a long number or keyword.

Good uses

  • "Text JOIN to start" sign-up cards on a shop counter.
  • Support or booking requests on a product label or appointment card.
  • Quick feedback: a code that sends "GREAT" or "SLOW" for table-side reviews.
  • Event check-in or raffle entries where each attendee sends the same keyword.

Create it in QRinst

  1. Open the QRinst generator and choose SMS under the More tab.
  2. Enter the phone number in international format, with the country code.
  3. Type the message you want pre-filled, then download the code.

Number format and message length

Always include the country code (for example +1 for the United States or +91 for India). A number without it may work on your phone and fail abroad. Do not add spaces or brackets.

Everything you type is stored in the pattern, so a long message makes a denser code with smaller squares. Keep the text to a keyword or one short sentence. If you need a longer message, link to a page instead using a normal link code.

Things to know before you print

The scanner only fills in the message. It never sends anything on its own, and standard carrier rates apply to whoever presses send. Say clearly on the print what will happen, for example "Scan to text us", and mention if replies may be automated.

Test on an iPhone and an Android phone. A few older apps ignore the pre-filled text, so keep the instruction readable on the print in case someone has to type it. Check the code with the QR checker before a print run.

Designing the call to action

People scan when they know what they will get. Next to the code, say what happens and what it costs them in a single line, for example "Scan to text us your order" or "Scan to join our offers list". A clear promise raises the number of scans far more than a bigger code does.

  • Name the action in plain words: text, join, vote, book.
  • Mention the number in readable text as a backup for people who cannot scan.
  • If replies are automated, say so, and explain how to stop messages.

Compliance and good practice

Collecting phone numbers for marketing is regulated in many countries. If you will send promotional messages to people who text you, make sure the sign states what they are agreeing to, keep a record of who opted in, and give them an easy way to opt out. Use a dedicated business number rather than your personal one, so that the messages do not land in your own inbox.
